In the time it took me to choose my topic I considered many possible topics. Many of those topics were the great depression, the Wright brothers, and many others. How I stumbled to the topic of the dust bowl was through research of the great depression. The great depression is actually in my background of my project so it is easy to see how there related. Honestly the dust bowl gave me interest; I saw part of a documentary on PBS about and it caught my eye. To add on to that I had a great resource; my grandma was in the dust bowl as a little girl.
Getting my research at times was a struggle. I had to dig down and find some good primary sources. One of the places that helped conduct my research was the Wilson library in the U of M. I got a couple of books and newspaper articles, which I would say definitely gave my project a boost. However most of my research has come of the internet. The most used website that I consistently came across would have to be the PBS website. It was almost guide book for my topic!
For me it was a simple decision to pick a website. I did not have to cut and glue or do anything artistic. Making a website definitely fits my style of using video and technology. Creating my project became considerably a lot easier once I focused myself and organized my information. At the start of my project I had trouble getting off to a fast start, but as I got to the end of my project almost everything clicked and I was able to manage to get it done. I really tried just to focus on one slide at a time and work my way through so that the flow of the website makes sense and makes the pages pop out.
The dust bowl relates to the theme of history day in a significant way. The dust bowl caused people to migrate to the west, caused death and disease, and finally changed the way people farmed to even today. If that's not a turning point in history then I don't know what is! My topic spread the southern part of the U.S in economic destruction in already a horrible situation with the great depression. Without the dust bowl, history would have been much different.
